Getting your CD insert dimensions right before sending files to print saves you time, money, and frustration.
Whether you are producing a music album, a software disc, or a corporate presentation package, the printed insert is often the first thing a customer handles.
And that said, we’ve prepared this guide to take you through the main CD insert sizes and dimensions used in printing.
What are the standard CD insert sizes and dimensions?
Being a printed booklet, the standard CD insert size is 4.75 inches wide by 4.75 inches tall for a single-panel front insert. This fits neatly inside a standard jewel case without buckling or overlapping the locking tabs.
If you are designing a booklet-style insert with multiple folded panels, each panel should maintain that same 4.75-inch height, with the width scaling in multiples depending on how many panels you need.
Your print-ready file, however, should be larger than the finished size. You need to include a bleed of at least 0.125 inches on all sides where the design runs to the edge. That brings your total file size to approximately 5 inches by 5 inches with bleed included.
Failing to add bleed causes white edges to appear after trimming.
Multi-panel and booklet insert dimensions
A two-panel insert, sometimes called a double-panel or bi-fold booklet, measures 9.5 inches wide by 4.75 inches tall when laid flat.
Folded, it becomes a standard 4.75-inch square. Four-panel and eight-panel configurations follow the same logic, doubling the width with each additional fold.
Keep in mind that a booklet printed on heavier paper stock may not fold as cleanly as one printed on a lighter weight. Most CD inserts are printed on 100 lb. gloss text stock, which offers enough rigidity to hold its shape while still folding without cracking.
If you plan to print on a heavier stock, discuss this with your print supplier before finalizing your file dimensions, as thick paper can cause panels to sit unevenly inside the case.
Spine and tray card dimensions
The tray card, also called the back card or J-card, is the piece that lines the back panel and wraps into the spine of the jewel case. The standard tray card size is 5.906 inches wide by 4.625 inches tall.
The spine itself, the narrow strip visible on the outside of the case, is typically 0.394 inches wide and is included within the total tray card width.
Because the tray card spine is so narrow, text placed there needs to be at a minimum 6 points in size to remain legible.
Here, a safe design approach is to keep all critical text, including artist names or product titles, centered on the spine with clear margins on both edges.
Safe zone and text placement
Every CD insert design should include a safe zone of 0.125 inches inside the trim edge.
So here, any text, logos, or design elements you want to preserve should sit within this boundary. Elements outside the safe zone risk being clipped during cutting.
This is especially important for designs with centered text or symmetrical layouts. Even a small shift during production can make a layout look off-balance if critical elements are positioned too close to the trim line.
Color mode and file format requirements
First of all, submit your CD insert files in CMYK color mode as a press-ready PDF. RGB files are not suitable for commercial offset printing and will produce color shifts you cannot predict from your screen.
If your design includes black text, use 100% black only (K: 100, C: 0, M: 0, Y: 0) rather than a rich black mix, which can cause misregistration on small types.
For any photographic elements or detailed artwork covering large areas, a rich black background of C: 60, M: 40, Y: 40, K: 100 gives a deeper, more saturated appearance than single-channel black alone.
Anything else to consider when choosing the right CD for your CD insert?
The finish you select affects both the look and the durability of your insert. A gloss coating intensifies colors and gives photography a vivid, sharp appearance.
Also, matte or soft-touch finish reduces glare and gives the insert a premium and tactile feel.
Here, UV coating adds a protective layer that resists fingerprints and light scratches, which matters for inserts that customers handle repeatedly.
If your insert includes a large block of solid dark color, a matte laminate can prevent the minor scuffing that often shows up on high-traffic print pieces.
