File Specifications For CD Inserts.

Portrait or Landscape

Ensure your file matches the selected size and orientation (portrait or landscape). If your file differs from the ordered size, it may be resized automatically unless you add the Trim to Custom Size service.

Panel Order & Fold Types

Follow the panel layout and measurements shown in the layout mockup above.

  • Different folds (e.g., tri-fold, roll-fold, gate fold) have specific panel widths—make sure content is centered correctly on each.
  • Follow the order in which each panel is positioned.
  • If your file has no bleed, fold lines may shift when we add it.
  • For custom size or folding, contact us to receive your folding instructions after placing the order.
  • Avoid designing dark backgrounds over the fold lines, as folding can cause the ink to crack.

Page Count & Page Order

A CD insert is printed on 1 sheet but counts as 2 pages: the front side (Page 1) and the back side (Page 2). That single sheet is then folded into the panels of your chosen fold type. All CD inserts must have a design on both sides of the sheet, so be sure to supply artwork for both Page 1 and Page 2.

The order of your pages matters. Page 1 must always be the outside of the folded insert and include the front cover, since this is the first panel customers see when the product is folded and closed.

Page 2 is the inside of the CD insert, containing the panels that are revealed as it's unfolded. Make sure your pages are arranged in this order before uploading, as files submitted out of sequence may print incorrectly.

Bleed, Trim & Safety Areas

An image, indicating file specifications when printing booklets

Please ensure your CD insert's file has the following dimensions:

  • Trim size 14.25” x 4.75”: The product currently selected in the configurator above on this page will be delivered in these dimensions.
  •  Bleed size 14.45” x 4.95”: Include + 1/10" on all four sides. This is the bleed that will be trimmed. Extend background images and graphics beyond this area.
  • Safe Zone: Keep all text and key elements at least 1/12" from the trim edge to prevent being trimmed.

RGB vs CMYK

Use CMYK only. Files in RGB or with spot colors will be automatically converted, which may cause colors to appear different from the original file:

  • The total ink coverage (C+M+Y+K) must not exceed 300% to ensure proper drying and prevent pages from sticking
  • For black or gray text, use only the K channel
  • For a rich black, use 40C / 0M / 0Y / 100K or 60/40/40/100

Image Resolution - Avoid Blurry Images

Use images with a minimum resolution of 150 dpi, though 300 dpi is recommended for the sharpest print quality. Avoid low-resolution or pixelated images.

Lamination

Film lamination (not to be confused with plastic pockets or sleeves) is bonded directly to your brochures to give them a protective layering. You can select between either matte or gloss film lamination.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • The products are trimmed after lamination, so the edges will not be sealed
  • Lamination adds durability and resistance to handling.

Know Which Font Types to Use

Use PostScript fonts for offset printing. If TrueType fonts are used, convert them to outlines (also known as paths or curves) to avoid rendering issues.

Save Your File Correctly

Export your artwork as PDF/X-3 for the best color accuracy and reliable printing results. Alternatively, you can send us JPEG or TIFF files. Adobe Photoshop users should always save their files as JPEG or TIFF. If a Photoshop PDF is required, please use Acrobat Distiller to create the PDF (you may download our Acrobat JobOptions further down this page). Please never save a PDF directly from Photoshop.

Choose Your Fold: CD Inserts Built to Fit.

Different CD insert styles call for different folds. From a single flat tray card to a multi-panel accordion packed with artwork and liner notes, the right fold shapes how your content unfolds in the listener's hands.

Choose the option that fits your release:

  • Flat Unfolded: A single flat panel with no folds, ideal for a simple tray card or a one-page insert that slips straight into the case.
  • Half/Bi-Fold: One fold down the center creates two panels or four pages, perfect for straightforward track listings, short liner notes, and clean front inserts.
  • Z-Fold: Folded into a "Z" shape so the panels flow in sequence, ideal for lyrics, step-by-step credits, or content meant to be read panel by panel.
  • Tri/Letter Fold: The industry-standard compact fold, great for album notes, thank-yous, and contact or social links in a neat, pocket-ready format.
  • Double Gate Fold: Two outer panels fold inward to meet at the center, then fold again, excellent for dramatic artwork reveals and premium special editions.
  • Roll Fold: Panels roll inward one inside the next, ideal for storytelling, extended liner notes, or a multi-section release.
  • Accordion Fold: Panels fold in an alternating zig-zag so every section opens at once, great for discographies, timelines, detailed credits, and deluxe editions with the most to show.
  • French Fold: Folded in half twice, vertically and horizontally, best for oversized artwork or a poster-style insert that opens out flat.

Choose from a variety of accordion fold options, ranging from 4 to 7 panels. These formats are often unavailable from many printers. The extra fold choices provide more room to organise your artwork, tracklists, credits, and other content creatively.

For the best results, don't place dark solid colors on fold lines. The ink might crack when you fold.

Note: For stapled and multi-page booklets that need binding to hold the pages together, explore our CD Booklets page.

Sustainable Printing, Without Compromise.

Every order we produce is made using eco-conscious processes, so sustainability is built into your product from the ground up, all without compromising on quality.

From the energy that powers our presses to the inks we print with, we've built environmental responsibility into every stage of production.

Whatever you order, it's produced to the same high environmental standards, giving you a responsibly made end product from start to finish.

Every order follows the same eco-conscious approach to inks, energy, and waste:

  • Eco-Conscious by Design: Sustainability guides how we make everything we produce, from the way we source our materials to the way each order moves through our facility. We're always looking for ways to lower the environmental footprint of your order while keeping the same crisp, full-color results across every page.
  • Green Production Facilities: Our production plant is powered by a dedicated on-site solar array spanning over 5,000 square feet, and waste heat from our presses and machines is repurposed to heat the building. Our operations also run on a fully electric vehicle fleet, ensuring clean transportation from start to finish.
  • Responsible Printing Processes: We use a solvent-free and alcohol-free printing process with organic inks and coatings, combined with process-free plate generation. We minimize the waste through electronic press setup and modern technology, so every order is produced as cleanly and efficiently as possible.

Common Questions About Ordering CD Inserts.

What is the difference between a CD insert and a CD booklet?

A CD insert is a single sheet, printed flat or folded into multiple panels, ideal for shorter content like artwork, tracklists, or notes. A CD booklet is a bound (saddle-stitched or perfect bound), multi-page document (8 to 320 pages) suited to longer content such as lyrics, credits, or galleries.

How big are CD inserts?

Standard CD inserts are typically 4.75 × 4.75 inches, which fits mstandard jewel cases. The product configurator and artwork templates will confirm the exact dimensions for your selected product.

Which file formats can I upload for printing?

We accept PDF, JPEG, and TIFF files. For best results, include the correct bleed, set your file to CMYK, and export your final design as a high-resolution PDF, ideally PDF/X-3.

How long will it take to receive my printed CD inserts?

Production times vary based on quantity and the options you select. We display exact turnaround dates in our live calendar within the pricing calculator, and we track all shipments to ensure timely, secure delivery.

If you also need other printing products for the same campaign, we automatically group items shipping to the same address to reduce delivery costs.

What panel and folding configurations do you offer for CD inserts?

We offer flat unfolded inserts plus a wide range of folds: half/bi-fold, tri/letter fold, and Z-fold, along with four-panel options like gate, roll, accordion, and French folds. Accordion folding extends up to seven panels, giving you considerable flexibility for multi-section layouts.

What are the flat and folded dimensions of your multi-panel inserts?

Flat sizes range from 9.5" x 4.75" up to 33.25" x 4.75" for multi-panel inserts, plus a 9.5" x 9.5" square option. Standard formats fold down to the 4.75" x 4.75" panel that fits a jewel case, depending on the folding style you select.

Do the inserts arrive pre-folded, or do they ship flat?

If you select a folding option, your inserts arrive professionally pre-folded and ready to place directly into the case.

What paper stocks fold best without cracking along the spine?

Lighter coated text stocks, from 70 lb to 120 lb, fold cleanly and are the safest choice for multi-panel inserts. All heavier card stocks starting from 12 pt will be scored before folding to avoid cracking along the folds. For designs with several panels we generally recommend a thinner text-weight paper.

Do your CD inserts include the rear Tray Card (back inlay with spines)?

Yes, we offer a dedicated "CD Back" format for the rear tray card that fits the back of the jewel case. This is the inlay visible through the case, and its folded spine edges typically carry the album or product title.

How do I ensure my text or images don't get lost in the fold lines?

Use our downloadable templates, which mark every fold line, and keep important text and images clear of those creases. Positioning key content within the central area of each panel, away from folds and the 0.1" bleed edges, ensures nothing important is obscured.

Can I include barcodes (UPC/EAN) or QR codes on the insert or tray card?

Yes. You can include UPC/EAN barcodes and QR codes on inserts or the tray card. For reliable scanning, place them on a single flat panel rather than across a fold, keep sufficient quiet space around them, and use high contrast against the background.

Can I get a printed sample before placing a large order?

We offer a free sample kit that showcases our available paper stocks, finishes, and print quality. You can request one at any time through our Samples page.

What is the cutoff time to start production on the same day?

To begin same-day production on folded CD inserts, your print-ready file should be uploaded before 3:00 AM EST. The configurator displays your estimated delivery date based on this cutoff, so you can confirm timing before placing your order.
